That's a lot of salary to shed, but it would allow them to sign some
good pitching talent. BTW, Belt is goinmg to be his usual starting
mystery. He had off-season surgery to remove a bone spur, so the
Giants have no idea whether he will be available to start the season.

Yeah they have only two players with long term salaries after this
season, Longoria at around $19 million and Tommy La Stella with 2 more
seasons after this upcoming one.

Team option on Longoria for 2023 so he's on the books for at least
through 2022.

Of course that's a lot of starters and starting pitcher they're going to
have to replace after this season.

So will Zaidi sign any big names a year from now? Probably not. He
said he's hoping Bart, Luciano and Ramos are ready to play next season.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers throw $102 million at the reigning Cy Young
winner to add to the the team which won the WS in the pandemic season
(60 games, so big asterisk).

Seems like Zaidi is trying to kind of do what the As or the Tampa Bay
Rays are doing, find some hidden treasures among castoffs from other
teams, Money Ball with one of th bigger revenues teams in the NL, though
that doesn't matter last season or this season unless fans are allowed
back into the stadiums.

They've already signed at least two potential starters, who could take
over if Johnny tanks like he did at the end of last season.

Yes, I saw the signing yesterday. If Posey has the kind of season they
expect, they might have to pick up the option. They'll have room by
then.

I haven't followed closely, but I've noticed what seems to be a lot of
one year contracts. Maybe some is "prove it" deals, of full-season
auditions of guys they're not sure about for the long term, but at the
same time, not locking in a lot of long term money.

Maybe there's some effect of lowering costs as long as they don't know
what to expect from attendance revenue, but I'm inclined to believe that
Zaidi is paying attention to the Moneyball approach, of chasing after
players that are likely to be productive, but undervalued by the market.
Right now, that seems to be borderline free agents, while they wait
for drafted talent to develop.

That said, I haven't seen how the Giants' farm system currently rates,
but it's been a really long time since I've seen lists of top 100 minor
league players that have more than 1 or 2 from the Giants (and rarely,
anybody near the top).

They're provie-it contracts. The Giants are gambling that they'll do
well and if they do, then the Giants can think about signing them to a
longer contract or let them go. So far the signings look good on
paper.
